Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching tem everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20

One Word

(Luke 1 v 38)

God is seemingly happy with dialogue

We see this with Moses

When he reasons regarding Israel’s fate

And with Abraham

With regard to Sodom

The psalms and prophets are full of times where clearly there has been a discussion.

Job, perhaps, is another that springs to mind

With long discourses

As he reasons about his state with the Almighty.

What is so stark about Mary’s dialogue with the angel is it’s brevity.

Her prepared heart offered no long debate

Lengthy questioning

Or analysis.

In the end, after a single question of wonder

Came the response

“Yes, I see it all now: I'm the Lord's maid, ready to serve.
Let it be with me just as you say”. (The Message)

In other words, simply

“Yes”.

Here, at the point at which God was about to initiate the greatest work

It took only a simple trusting word, and it was done.

If Christ is to be formed in us, it means us saying

“Yes”, too.

Yes to the Holy Spirit

Yes to those in need.
