Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching tem everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20

Balance

(1 John 3 v 6 - 8)

We hear it all the time

"We must strike a balance here"

The implication is that we don't want anyone

To rock the boat

"It's all about balance"

But I am not convinced that this is the real cry

The real cry is for something extreme

Something like the Grace of God

Something as outlandish as

Mercy for sin or outrageous love

When we say "balance" I am concerned that what we really mean is

"Middle of the road" or "Average" or "Bland"

We risk this in our lives with God and do so to our detriment

How can any encounter with the Creator of the universe

Be "balanced"?

Extreme love makes a demand that says:

"I did it for you; now go do it for others"

I have always found it profoundly wearing trying to keep a balance.

Whatever that really means.

If there is any balance with God, it seems to be always one of extremes.
